Top 10 Wedding Movies

Hollywood has churned out some great movies over the decades with wedding themes. Here is our list of the top 10 wedding movies:

#10: Runaway Bride

It’s a silly premise. A woman (Julia Roberts) gets engaged and stands up one fiancé after another at the altar. Richard Gere is a journalist who wants to write a story on the bride’s eccentricity, and of course, they fall in love. The movie was an excuse to re-unite Gere and Roberts who demonstrated such on-screen chemistry in a previous film, ‘Pretty Woman”.

#9: The Wedding Planner

Jennifer Lopez at her fetching best. She plays a wedding planner who falls in love with a guy (Matthew McConaughey) whose wedding (to another woman) she’s planning. How can the premise fail with such a great cast? It doesn’t. You’ll have a blast watching it work to its predictable, romantic conclusion.

#8: My Best Friend’s Wedding

What’s interesting about this movie is that it doesn’t quite work it’s way to a predictable, romantic ending. Yes, it is romantic, but the journey to altar takes a number of twists and turns. Julia Roberts returns as a woman determined to sabotage the engagement of her ‘best’ friend, who happens to be a man.

#7: The Wedding Singer

Adam Sandler plays the ‘wedding singer’ who is stood up at the altar (a popular theme, apparently) at his own wedding. Eventually, he falls for Drew Barrymore as she is planning her own wedding to a guy (not Sandler) who cheats on her. You can guess who ends up together. (Wedding movies by and large are very predictable.)

#6: Four Weddings and a Funeral

This is the movie that launched Hugh Grant on the road to stardom. He plays  the role of a committed bachelor who’s resolve weakens, and eventually he finds himself at the altar about to say ‘I do’ when suddenly everything unravels (of course). Very fun stuff. This is a wedding movie where happy-ever-after doesn’t necessarily end in a wedding (despite the title of the film).

#5: Mama Mia

Delightful fun and silliness. How can you go wrong with a musical based on ABBA songs, a wedding, a gorgeous setting on a Greek isle, and a cast which includes Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried? The plot doesn’t much matter because the characters are so fun to hear them singing and to watch them dancing. This is our only musical on our list of Top 10 Wedding Movies and well worth watching.

#4: Father of the Bride

A very fun movie about a dad, played by Steve Martin, coming to grips with his daughter’s wedding announcement. Great supporting cast with Diane Keaton and Martin Short as, drumroll, the wedding planner!

#3: Bridesmaids

Where most of the movies on this list are either romantic and/or amusing, Bridesmaids is raucous, well, maybe raunchy is more honest, humor at its best. The film sets up the bridesmaids’ antics with a top-tier cast of comedic talent, including Saturday Night Live alums, Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Throw Melissa McCarthy into the mix and you can’t miss.

#2: About Time

This movie is a little-known gem. It has one of the most creative plot lines of any on this list. It seems that the menfolk of a certain family have the ability to travel back in time to earlier points in their lives. But their ability to tinker with time creates complications in our hero’s (Domhnall Gleeson) love life as he pursues Rachel McAdams. Bill Nighy’s wedding toast is the best ever, and it’s barely a minute long.

#1: My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Another highly creative (and funny!) screenplay on the complexities of merging two families into one. The clash of cultures is hilarious as a woman of (very) Greek heritage becomes engaged to a man from a traditional WASP background. This film only cost $5 million, which isn’t much by Hollywood standards, but it grossed $368 million at the box office. Worth watching again and again. This is an easy #1 on our list of Top 10 Wedding Movies.
