Is air travel safe for honeymooners?
The pandemic of 2020 disrupted wedding and honeymoon plans for thousands of couples. Many wonder if air travel is safe in light of COVID-19? No one wants to to pick up the virus nor spread it. So is air travel safe for honeymooners?
MIT Medical paints a rosy picture
MIT Medical says the air quality in airlines is remarkably good:
- Air volume is entirely refreshed every two to four minutes throughout the entire cabin.
- Half of the ‘used’ air is dumped outside.
- The rest is filtered through the plane’s high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA) like hospitals use, then mixed in with fresh outside air.
- In all, this system filters out 99.97% of virus-sized particles.
They system isn’t perfect, but it’s darn good. So what are the odds of contracting COVID-19 while flying to and from your honeymoon destination?
The odds of picking up COVID-19 while flying are slim
According to Arnold Barnett, professor or statistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sloan School of Management, the odds are just 1 in 4,300 if the flight is full.
If the middle seat is vacant, the odds improve to 1 in 7,700.
Airlines are working hard to make their flights even safer by cleaning planes before every flight using advanced fogging equipment. Airlines offering this level of sanitation include Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, and United. Watch Delta’s video above for some peace-of-mind.
Your biggest risk is actually time spent in crowded terminals. Masking is recommended. But once you’re on the plane, you can breathe easy.
So is air travel safe for honeymooners? It all comes down to your individual comfort level. But all in all, airlines deserve credit for providing cleaner planes and amazing air quality. Life is never risk-free. Plan your honeymoon accordingly.
