Islands in the Stream

The latest wedding movie to stream on Amazon this season is, “You’re Cordially Invited.” It stars the always fun Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. Perhaps the best part of the movie was the use of the Bee Gees’ 1983 hit song, “Islands in the Stream,” as originally sung by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.

The movie itself followed the wedding rom-com playbook to a T. Due to a booking snafu, two families get their weddings scheduled at the same date and time on a tiny island wedding venue, and there’s only room for one.

Neither side wants to yield. This leads to a predictable clash between Will Ferrell (the dad of the bride from wedding party #1) and Reese Witherspoon (the older sister of the bride from wedding party #2).

The conflict sets up a series of outlandish wedding shenanigans that ultimately leads to [PREDICTABLE SPOILER ALERT!!]: romance between Ferrell’s and Witherspoon’s characters.

It’s a fun, if sometimes raunchy, journey, earning it an R rating for prolific profanity. The movie really didn’t need all that dirty talk.

Ferrell and Witherspoon do everything required of them to delight the audience and tickle their funny bone, (other than an overuse of expletives). As the final credits roll, Ferrel and Witherspoon perform “Islands in the Stream” (above). And they perform the song in their own voices. Very fun.

“Islands in the Stream” was a #1 hit song on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart back in 1983 as sung by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton (below).

The song title plays off an Ernest Hemingway novel of the same name. The lyrics work well for a wedding first dance:

“Islands in the stream,

That is what we are,

No one in between,

How can we be wrong?

Sail away with me,

To another world,

And we rely on each other, 

From one lover to another.”
